A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
